Grab your dust mask and gloves. Then, follow these tips for a squeaky clean, and healthy HVAC system. 

1. Cover the Registers

Use paper towels or clothes to cover the supply registers during cleaning. This will keep dust and debris from blowing into the home while you’re cleaning. Just lift the grills, cover the opening, then replace the grills.

2. Turn on the Fan

Before you start cleaning, turn off the heat supply, then turn on the fan to loosen debris. 

3. Clean the Supply Registers First

Use the brush and vacuum cleaner to remove dust, dirt, and allergens from the supply registers. The long handle brush should be sufficient for getting deep into the pipes. 

4. Clean the Return Air Registers

Repeat step three above on the return air registers. 

5. Shut the Power Supply to the HVAC System 

After cleaning the supply and return air registers, let the fan run for a couple of minutes. Then, turn off the power connected to the system. You’ll need access to the main ducts in the next few steps, and you don’t want to be cleaning when it’s hot. 

6. Remove the Air Duct Covers

You’ll probably need a screwdriver for this part. Next, unscrew the air duct covers, and clean the grates with a soapy towel and water. 

7. Vacuum the Air Ducts

With the hose attachment, thoroughly vacuum the air duct system. Use the brush to remove moldy spots and stuck-on grime. A cleaning cloth should take care of the rest. Use it to wipe the interior of the duct. You can wrap it around the brush head for areas out of reach. 

8. Clean the Blower Compartment

The blower compartment can clog if left uncleaned for too long. Remove the panels covering the blower compartment and clean it with a soft cloth. Be extra careful when cleaning the furnace fan. 

9. Replace the Furnace Filter

The final step is to replace the furnace filter. A clogged furnace filter prevents air from getting into the system and can damage the mechanics. 

10. Remove Towels and Turn the System Back On

Now that your air ducts are clean and dust-free remove the towels covering the supply registers, replace any grills, and fire up the system.

Is It Okay to Leave a Wet Carpet Alone?

Water and moisture trapped on the surface and deep within the carpet layers is a prime spot for mold growth. Soggy carpet causes further damage when it makes contact with wooden surfaces such as the subfloor or furniture.

7 Steps to Drying Wet Carpet 

With water events, there are several things to do for recovery. Carpet drying is one of the most important tasks. Interiors must be completely dried to avoid mold growth, carpet especially. 

When it’s time to get started on the drying process, here are seven steps on how to dry wet carpet. These ensure that the carpet is acceptable for living conditions. 

1. Remove Furniture from the Carpet

Depending on the extent of the water damage, you should remove from the room everything you want to preserve. Family photos, electronics, valuable furniture pieces, etc. are all things that could be destroyed with exposure to moisture.

Unfortunately, items with extensive and permanent water damage may have to be disposed of. Items like upholstered furniture need special cleaning care.

It’s important that you protect your furniture from further water damage. Either remove it from the wet carpet or place a barrier between (like foil around the legs).

TIP: For paper items you want to save (like books), place them in the freezer.  Freezing the water in the paper will stop the damage.  Remember--liquid water is what causes the damage, not frozen water.  To restore water-damaged paperwork and books, we need to go through a process called sublimation.  Normally, frozen water turns into liquid which then turns into steam.  Sublimation is when the frozen moisture in an item is extracted straight to steam and the liquid part of the process is skipped.  This is how what were once-wet books and papers are saved.

2. Soak Up Water and Remove Moisture

Agenda item number one in recovery is to remove as much water and moisture as possible mechanically. This is done with towels, mops, and extraction machines.

Carpet that has been touched by sewage cannot be cleaned.  This damage will result in carpet having to be replaced. 

Depending on how much water there is to remove, a shop vac may or may not be able to suck up all the water. A heavy-duty water extractor is the best way to get water out of carpet.

Dehumidifiers help remove problem moisture, but water extractors are always the first step. 

3. Create Air Flow

Ventilation aids the drying process. Opening windows gets the air circulating, but only if the humidity outside is lower than it is indoors. 

4. Use a Fan and Turn Up AC

Along the lines of airflow, fans and the AC help dry the room and then help with drying the carpet. The higher the power, the better the drying effect. 

Use portable fans and ceiling fans to encourage drying. Your air conditioner isn’t as effective as fans are, but turning up the heat promotes drying because warm air captures more moisture.

5. Steam Clean the Carpet

Once the carpet is dry enough, steam cleaning goes to work to kill bacteria and mold spores.

6. Replace Carpet Padding

Next, inspect the carpet padding. Pull up the carpet for padding removal. If it’s moderately damp and not soaked, laying out the affected sections in the sunshine dries it. 

It’s not worth salvaging carpet padding that is very wet or has been wet for a long time. Padding is inexpensive to replace.

Once the padding has been remediated or replaced, put the carpet back.

7. Drying Carpet with Baking Soda

Baking soda is a favorite household helper. If you sense an odor or you think it could just use a freshening up, baking soda is perfect for this.

Once the carpet is mostly dry, sprinkle the baking soda generously over the affected area. Let it sit up to 24 hours. This may require more than one package of baking soda.

Once it’s had enough time to work, vacuum it up. Baking soda on wet carpet soaks up moisture and takes care of odors.

 It’s DIY time, friends!

9. Utility Knife

If you need to cut something with precision, a utility knife is your best friend. And, it’s almost guaranteed your relationship will last through the years since the blades are retractable and replaceable.

10. Power Drill

11. Circular Saw

12. Crowbar

Pets are adorable, but let’s face it, a lot can happen to your carpet over a short period of time if you have a pet or two.

Perhaps you have a playful puppy or kitten that hasn’t quite figured out that your carpet is not the same thing as your lawn. Or, if you are lucky enough to have a pet that knows the difference between carpet and grass, you’re likely still dealing with shedding, dander, and the all-too-common mud tracks coming in from outside.

Long story short, if you have pets, your carpet probably doesn’t smell (or look) as good as it did when it was originally installed. Of course, pet ownership is worth the work that goes into it, but you’ll need to take a few extra steps to keep your house clean for you and any guests you have over.

Sure, it can be a lot of work - but don’t sweat it - it’s manageable, especially with the help of an experienced professional! Read on to learn how to keep your carpet clean despite your pets being, well… pets.

How to Keep Your Carpet Clean if You Have Pets

1. Go Hard on the Stains

Have a puppy with a long tail? Spillage accidents are bound to happen whenever you have a new pet running around. Of course, it’s cute when your puppy is happy, but when that turns into their happy, wagging tail spilling your coffee off the coffee table, it’s just a little less cute.

First things first, catch these accidents as soon as possible to prevent the spots from taking hold on your carpet (especially if you have light-colored carpet).

When solids (such as food) fall on the floor, use a dustpan to remove what you can, then cover the stain with paper towels. Once the area is dry, clean it with warm water to prevent discoloration.

Expert Carpet Cleaning Tip: If the spill happens at night or when you are away at work, use a combination of vinegar and cold water once you spot the spill to remove the odor. Follow this up by scrubbing the area with a good carpet cleaner.

2. Vacuum Clean Your Carpet Twice Per Week

Vacuuming is your best line of defense when trying to remove pet hair from your carpet - both visible and hidden in the fibers.

Even if your pets don’t shed fur, they may still be shedding dander (the allergy-causing particles in their coats), and, if you live in a typical household, dust and food particles are thriving in your carpet fibers and creating odors that are… less than desirable - to say the very least.

The next time you are vacuuming, move your furniture towards the edges of the room so that you can get to the whole length of the carpet (depends on the layout of your room).

In addition, pet hair can travel underneath the furniture, especially if you have a nearby air vent or fan, allowing odor-creating particles to hide long enough to put off an unpleasant odor.

Pro Tip #1: For the best results, use duct tape before vacuuming to pick large chunks of hair. If you don’t have a roll handy, there’s always a DIY solution! Try wetting your kitchen rubber gloves and running your hands quickly through the carpet to pick up the pet hair.

Pro Tip #2: One other thing to keep in mind is that pets drool all over their toys, so clean those toys relatively often so smelly saliva residue doesn’t have a fighting chance at ruining your movie night.

3. Place a Rug or a Towel at Each Entrance

If you walk your pets often, you’ve probably realized that most of the dirt on your carpet comes from outside. Don’t worry - there’s a quick fix for this problem!

Place a towel or a small rug at each outside entrance to your home/apartment, or living space. When you get back from your walk, wipe the pet’s paws before setting them free to roam inside.

4. Clean Pet Urine off Your Carpet

No matter how well trained your pets are, they are bound to urinate on the carpet from time to time. To clean it up, start by laying a small towel over the patch.

As the urine absorbs into the towel, mix some warm water with your dishwashing liquid and pour it on the stain and rinse the stain with a clean towel and warm water. Finally, lay some paper towels on the stain to absorb moisture and rid your carpet of any odor. Voila!  

Tip: For vomit stains, pour some club soda on the spot and let it sit for 30 seconds. Next, soak up the stain with a dry cloth. Repeat this until nothing is being transferred to the cloth.

5. Keep Your Pets Well Groomed

Have you ever sat down on your carpet, taken a sniff and thought, “this smells like a dirty dog”?

If you have, it’s probably an indicator that you need to groom your pets more often. Bathing your pets regularly will definitely help to keep the rugs odor free.

Also, trim their nails (but be careful not to trim too much). Long pet nails can damage carpet fibers and spread them all over the place.  Keep up the grooming and brush your pets regularly (outside) and your carpet will look and smell great for much longer!
