Top 5 Reasons You Should Clean Your Air Ducts

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

We’re all big fans of oxygen, right? Well, it turns out your home is a big fan of it as well.

You can look at your HVAC and air ducts as a circulatory system. It keeps homes and buildings “alive” by pumping air into and from every room. As it is with humans, when airflow is restricted, complications start to arise. This is why cleaning your air ducts is an important service to consider.

We understand you might be wondering if you need to get your air ducts and HVAC cleaned. Not all homes are the same, not everyone lives the same, and there are various factors that may affect air quality. Since we’re considered one of the top air duct cleaners in Dallas (nothing wrong with a little confidence every now and then), we understand the problems that a dirty duct system can cause.

Generally speaking, cleaning should happen every three to five years. However, if any of the following applies to you, consider cleaning your air ducts more frequently:

  • You or someone you live with suffers from allergies
  • You or someone you live with has respiratory issues
  • You have one pet or more
  • You have a smoker living in the house
  • You live in an older home

This isn’t to say these are the only reasons to consider cleaning your HVAC. That would make this a short article, and we know you’d feel cheated. There are several major benefits in hiring a professional to inspect and clean your HVAC system. Of course, we’ll expand upon this now.

1. A Healtheir Living Environment

As you might recall, we mentioned people with respiratory and allergy problems. These folks tend to be more sensitive to particles and dust in a home. But, unclean air can affect a person with no breathing problems as well. (Our air duct cleaners in Dallas see it all the time because of the infamous Texas dust.)

Here’s the deal — there may be more in the dust and dirt than meets the eye. Depending on who or what occupies your home, there could be pet dander, skin cells, pollen, bacteria, and other gross particles. As Discover Magazine revealed, a house with six rooms can collect 40 pounds of dust a year! Additionally, the EPA terrified us all with the fact that indoor air is 20 percent more polluted than outdoor air.

Luckily, the right cleanup and restoration firm will service your HVAC, air ducts, and replace your filters. This will reduce or remove dirt, dust, pollen, pet dander, and contaminants.

2. Protection Against Contamination

As if skin cells and bacteria weren’t enough, there are other issues that require a more serious approach to HVAC and air duct cleaning. It is possible for your system to harbor some nasty stuff that’s potentially detrimental to your health.

Mold

Mold can not only make its way into portions of your HVAC system, but it can also end up in the insulation of your ducts (if insulation exists). This fungus may or may not visible. If you think mold might be present somewhere, a professional should be called in to inspect.

Rodents and Insects

Sorry if that made your skin crawl, but it’s true. Rodents and insects can move through your house leaving droppings and other potentially disease-causing matter behind. This can end up in your air!

3. Save Money

Having a little extra spending money isn’t such a bad thing, right? Cleaning and maintaining your HVAC unit can increase energy efficiency and decrease utility bills.

If dust and dirt buildup is reducing the airflow in the HVAC and ducts, it causes the whole system to work harder. This may involve longer running times, which can shorten the life of your system.

Plus, if components of your HVAC unit are clogged, you might get less heat in the winter and a lack of cooling in the summer. Again, this can result in longer running times.

Obviously, the more a unit runs, the more money you’re paying. And, we don’t need to talk about the cost of replacing an entire HVAC system.

4. An Overall Cleaner Home

Your HVAC system circulates air through the home which means if it’s picking up dust and contaminants, it’s moving that stuff from room to room. This means your furniture and personal belongings are being showered by particles.

Also, if there is a buildup of mold, bacteria, and other unpleasant organisms, you could end up with an odor in your home. We’re fairly certain that the majority of folks do not like living in a stinky house. The removal of this matter can eliminate the bad smell.

5. You’re Unsure Of Your Home’s History

It probably goes without saying that if you’re in a brand-new home, you most likely don’t have to be too concerned about your ducts yet. But, as we all know, not everyone buys new.

When you purchase a home from someone else, the HVAC unit might be on the older side. There could be years of wear and tear that you’re unaware of. Moreover, you can’t be certain about the cleaning history of the ducts and HVAC.

It’s also worth mentioning that if you perform any renovation or remodeling, this can increase dust, dirt, and allergens in the home and HVAC unit.
