How Long is Water Remediation in Dallas?

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

man and woman walking through a flood office Water remediation typically takes 3 to 5 days.

In Dallas, most water remediation projects will last somewhere between 3 to 5 days.  What determines the length of your water restoration project will depend on a variety of factors, including:

  • The category of water.  There are three classifications of water from clean water to severely contaminated: 1, 2, and 3.  The more contaminated your water, the more will have to be done to clean and make your home safe again--which will extend the timeline of restoration.
  • The contents in your home.  If the water flooded a room with many items, it’s very likely that those items will have to be moved to the restoration can be done properly.
  • The weather.  To dry quickly, warm, dry air will have to be introduced into your property while eliminating excess moisture and humidity.  If the weather outside is adding to the moisture in the environment, your timeline may be extended as the drying equipment has more work to do than usual.
  • Flooring type.  Some floors are easy to dry, like vinyl and some tile.  Hardwood flooring and carpets present their own challenges and can extend the timeline of your project.

How Long Can Water Sit on Hardwood Floors?

Does water ruin wood floors?  No, it doesn’t have to--if you act fast to get the water extracted and the drying process started.  The best water restoration companies understand this, and that’s why they will respond 24-hours a day, every day of the year, to your call.

If your floors are sealed, you’ll likely have a little bit more time before water penetrates and starts to damage the wood.  If your hardwood floors are not sealed, the water will begin to seep and soak into the wood immediately.

When dealing with hardwood floors, time is of the essence.  The faster the response, the better the chance the water damage restoration company will have of successfully saving the floors.

Ask your damage restoration company what tools they have to save hardwood floors.  Experienced and professional companies will have specialized tools made to save hardwoods--make sure the company you choose has the proper equipment to help.

If you have water damaged wood floors, you may have to consider water damage repairs.  Luckily, floor replacement is almost always part of a covered water damage insurance claim.

Water Damage Repairs in Dallas

The process of repairing water damage wood floors unfortunately includes demolishing the current flooring.  For carpet, this involves:

  • Taking out the carpet pad, carpet, and then
  • Making sure to dry the subfloor
  • Then, putting down a fresh pad and carpet.

Taking out the carpet and pad will take about a day.  Drying will take 3-5 days, and then installing new carpet takes another day.  The delay in replacement usually comes from ordering your carpet and waiting for it to be shipped to your contractor.

For hardwood flooring, the process will take longer.  This involves:

  • Taking out the damaged floor.  This may involve days of demolition.  Your damage restoration company will usually install temporary containment areas so the dust from the demolition doesn’t spread to other areas of your home.
  • Drying the subfloor.
  • Ordering a new floor and waiting for it to acclimate.  True hardwood floors require a two-week acclimation period where the wood will take its final shape with the help of the natural humidity of your property.  This process can’t be rushed.
  • Installation, which usually takes less than one week.

If you are ordering new flooring after a major storm has hit your hometown, expect delays from manufacturers.

If you are filing an insurance claim, also keep in mind that your insurance company has to approve everything.  Your insurance adjuster may take days or even weeks to give final approval.  An experienced water damage restoration company will understand how to give the adjuster the documentation they need to make their decision, but ultimately, the decision to approve or deny your claim rests solely on your insurance company and not your contractor.

Water Leak Damage Repair

Remember that the first step to water remediation has to be to fix the leak that caused the flood in the first place.  Without fixing the leak, any water extraction and cleanup will be in vain.

Hire a water restoration contractor that can help you find and fix the leak.  If the leak isn’t fixed, the water damage company may start with the water extraction to help with a worsening problem, but they should have the leak found and repaired if they want to take further action.
