School Gym Needs Commercial Water Damage Restoration in Dallas

Water Trapped Underneath Floor in Dallas

A leaking pipe caused this Dallas school’s basketball court to flood over a weekend.  While the water was quickly extracted, the moisture barrier underneath the hardwood flooring made removing the flooring necessary.

This gym had multiple layers of flooring that were impacted by water damage.  On the surface was the hardwood floor with basketball markings. To the naked eye, you can see the water that is directly on top of the surface flooring.  When that water was extracted, it looked like the job was completed, but it was just beginning.  Using infrared moisture meter, our technicians were able to spot trapped water underneath the hardwood floor.  Further investigation showed us that between the surface flooring and the subfloor was an underlayment acting as a moisture barrier.

Underlayment acts as structural support to the support, and it makes walking on the surface floor much more comfortable.  Underlayments are very common in gyms because the activity on the hardwood floor causes noise and impacts a person’s knees as they run across it.  For basketball courts, a quality underlayment is often necessary to lessen the noise of the sport and to provide support to the players.

Removing Moisture Barriers in Dallas

Unfortunately, underlayments also act as moisture barriers.  In a household, an underlayment is a cushion underneath the carpet.  When a carpet gets soaking wet, it’s almost always necessary to elevate the carpet and take out the cushion to make sure both the carpet and the subfloor dry properly.  Proper drying prevents future mold growth, and it also stops any further damage happening to the foundations of a home. When an underlayment traps moisture between the surface floor and the subfloor, it’s an invitation for future mold growth and other problems.  It also makes it extremely difficult and sometimes impossible for water extraction machines, including high-powered pumps, to reach the trapped water on the subfloor.

When a portion of the surface hardwood flooring and underlayment were removed, our technicians found an additional small pool of trapped water on the concrete.  To maintain the structural integrity of the subfloor, the top two layers had to be removed.  A commercial desiccant dehumidifier and air movers were installed to remove the excess moisture in the gym and prevent damage to other structures.
